I am Assistant Professor of Economics at the Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá, Colombia. I received a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.
My research interests are in the applied micro fields of public economics, regulation and rural development policy. More precisely, I explore the nature of social capital, in particular how social networks affect the emergence of collective action. I also carry out empirical research on the incidence of the VAT and other taxes. Topics in rural development include the fiscal aspects of agricultural policy and how rural households in emerging countries deal with risk. I am part of an ongoing project at the Universidad de los Andes to administer a longitudinal panel survey of rural households in Colombia. Take a look at some of my work and the courses I'm currently teaching.
I wasn't always an economist. I received B.A. degrees in Physics and Mechanical Engineering at the Universidad de los Andes and worked for a while at a dam in Tierralta, Córdoba.
I am Colombian -therefore a native speaker of Spanish- but I am also fluent in German and English and functional in French.
